Building a Highly Integrated EtherCAT Motion Control Architecture to Accelerate Robotic Arm Applications

As six-axis robotic arms continue to see increasing demand in automation equipment, semiconductor peripheral systems, and inspection applications, system integrators and equipment manufacturers are often challenged by complex multi-axis synchronization requirements and difficult integration between HMI and motion control systems.

To address these challenges, ICOP has successfully completed the integration and validation of the QEC EtherCAT MDevice Platform controlling the Oriental Motor OVR series six-axis robotic arm, establishing a deployable EtherCAT-based motion control architecture for real-world applications. This solution serves as a reference design for OEMs and system integrators.

EtherCAT Six-Axis Robotic Arm Control Architecture

The system is built on the QEC-M-090T EtherCAT MDevice and HMI integrated platform, which connects to the OVR six-axis robotic arm drive system via real-time EtherCAT communication, forming a unified “motion control + HMI” architecture.

The system operates using Distributed Clocks (DC) synchronization to ensure precise multi-axis coordination and real-time performance. It also includes built-in homing procedures and safety mechanisms to improve deployment efficiency.

In addition, the integrated ArduBlock and 86HMI tools enable engineers to rapidly build motion prototypes and perform real-time data monitoring, significantly lowering the development barrier.

Rapid Development Workflow

This solution is developed based on the 86Duino IDE (C/C++ architecture) and establishes a standardized development workflow:

• Forward and inverse kinematics (FK / IK) validation
• EtherCAT multi-axis synchronized motion control integration
• HMI operation and status monitoring
• Motion recording, tuning, and playback

This workflow effectively reduces the development time for robotic arm system integration.
